INTERACT awarded funding to coordinate workshop on IPY Arctic Access Programme
INTERACT has been awarded funding through the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Working Groups to coordinate a workshop to design a new Arctic Access Programme for the 5th International Polar Year (IPY 2032–33).
The workshop will bring together international partners to co-design how researchers will access Arctic research infrastructures and associated data during the International Polar Year. The aim is to develop a coordinated and inclusive access framework that supports high-quality research and addresses key scientific priorities across the Arctic.
Building on INTERACT’s experience in managing transnational, remote and virtual access to Arctic research stations and infrastructure, the programme will help strengthen collaboration and improve access to key research environments.
The workshop will involve stakeholders from across the Arctic research community, including IASC Working Groups, APECS, Indigenous Peoples’ representatives and other partners. Together, they will help shape the structure, governance and priorities of the proposed access programme.
Key outputs will include a workshop report, a concept paper, and materials to support engagement with funding bodies and the wider community. The concept will also be presented at ASSW 2027 in Japan.
The IPY Arctic Access Programme is part of broader preparations for the International Polar Year 2032/33, which will bring an intensive period of coordinated polar research, observation and collaboration.
