Call for Abstracts to EGU 2026 Session on Rain-on-snow events
Rain-on-snow (ROS) events are emerging as a critical research topic as climate change accelerates across the Arctic. Increasing winter rainfall is altering snowpack properties, hydrological pathways, and ecosystem dynamics, with far-reaching consequences for Arctic landscapes, biodiversity, and communities. To address these challenges, a dedicated session on “Rain-on-Snow” will take place at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026, held 3-8 May 2026 in Vienna.
The session will bring together interdisciplinary research on the physical processes, impacts, and feedbacks associated with rain-on-snow events. Contributions are invited across a broad range of perspectives, including field observations, remote sensing, modelling, hydrology, ecology, and climate impacts. Particular emphasis will be placed on high-latitude and Arctic environments, where rapid warming is fundamentally reshaping snow regimes and ecosystem functioning.
The session is co-convened by Leena Leppänen, member of the INTERACT Board of Directors, and Elmer Topp-Jørgensen, Coordinator of the INTERACT Secretariat, alongside an international team of cryosphere and Arctic researchers.
Abstract submission is open until 15 January 2026
